An aristocrat? Haha, nothing of the sort. Truly the opposite, really. To make a long story short and not to bore you, back in my world, this fortress doubled as a prison. I came here when I was about thirteen, and after a twenty year sentence, I worked my way up in the world and eventually found myself in a position that'd have me take control of it.
...To make it a better place, for those who could no longer be part of functioning society, to give them a second option to going forward in life, regardless of the crimes they've committed.
It's no longer a prison here--thankfully--but the concept is the same. I want this to be a place where people can live and have community. Therefore the money to run this place comes from several places--both from my own pocket, from the job I work in the city as one of its protectors--as well as from the Aides du Meropide. A group that Maxima and the others living down here organized to help me with the costs.
sure did lose this notif in my inbox, sorry about that!
So you aren't a noble. I had the impression that you were someone of a higher status because of your titles.
Never figured that you'd be a former prisoner though. I guess I should say thank you for deciding to use this fortress in a positive way. When I first arrived in the city I had no where to go. My home is at war and that was all I knew. I became a soldier to fight for freedom.
Down here it's different.
People were kind and they gave me food to eat. I didn't have to worry about starving. You're organized and keep things together. That's a good thing.
Back in the military, there were entire battalions that didn't know what they were doing.
The title is one I got because of my position of being the one who oversees the fortress and its autonomy. I didn't even really want the title--not even in my own world, really. I just felt I could do a better job than the previous Warden, so. Here we are.
I'll take the thanks, even if I don't really feel it's necessary. I feel anyone who was in my shoes at the time would choose to do the same. The world can be a cruel place. We may have just met today, but given on the limited information you just supplied me on your own world... I feel it's exactly for people like you that I want this place to function as a comfortable place.
I don't want anyone to starve. And I don't want anyone to live without the comfort of a roof over their head.
If you ever need anything, you can just send me a message. I'll do anything in my power to help you.
Well, since you aren't running this place as a prison I'd say you're doing a better job already.
You don't seem like a bad person and I don't regret coming here.
I'm not in the military anymore so there's no need for me to be rigid. Granted, that's still something I need to unlearn and it'll take awhile before I fully adjust.
I may need your help learning the ropes. There's still a lot of things I don't really understand. I'm only fifteen years old and everyone here's a lot older than me including yourself.
Your experiences in life got you this far. That's something I can commend too.
[The video feed is in the cafeteria, where Jun is sitting at one of the tables with a massive cup of coffee. On the table there's a box that's full to the brim with various decorative crosses- anyone whose been to his room would recognize it as the crosses from his wall of crosses.
He looks tired. It's been awhile since he's pulled an all-nighter for holy knight work. Last the fortress dwellers would've heard, it was that Jun was taking a vow of silence for Lent but... well, he seems to be chatting now.]
Demon attacks are on the rise, so I'm going to be putting up crosses in some spots in the fortress to help ward them. It's not a perfect deterrent, but it'll help the same way lavender wards off ants.
They'll be blessed with three charges of holy power, so you can use them as a weapon in a pinch.
If you want one or two for your room or corridor, let me know. I don't recommend them if you are a demon or a demon likes to visit your place.
I'm not looking to convert anyone, this is just a precaution.
[Oh that's a sad detail. His tired brain is telling him this is the time to show empathy]
That's rough.
[Nailed it. He's now looking at the address... he knows that's a nice part of town, but not one he's super familiar with. Shit, there goes teleporting there and making it a quick job.]
...Okay, two options. I can bless some crosses and give them to you, or I can come by your house in a day or two.
[The furrow between Maxima's eyebrows suggests he's having isekai problems again.]
...The internet has a great number of things to say about demons, many of them contradictory. They seem somewhat akin to my world's voidsent, but to be quite honest my knowledge on those is mostly limited to rumor and folklore as well. Aside from their being violent monsters, is there anything those from other worlds should know about them?
[That was probably meant to be an inside thought. He scrubs his face. Ok. Okay he can do this.]
TLDR, lots of things get mislabeled as demons by humans, but the demons we're concerned with are spirit realm beings with demonic energy- which is basically the opposite of divine energy. Not all demons are bad, but many thrive on the darker side of the humanity... or just eat people.
I see, hence the mention of benign visitors who might be affected. Thank you for the warning, and for the work you've done in warding the Fortress. I hope it all proves unnecessary, but it's good to know we need to be on our guard.
Mm, there are demons who prefer to live peacefully among humans, or even try to help protect humanity. Unfortunately, the ones who don't choose to do that can be real threats.
[ Ugh. The only experience with demons Varian's really had is with Zhan Tiri and she was... deeply unfun. Also probably not someone who could have been swayed by holy relics. But these ones are, thankfully, not warlocks who dabbled in the dark arts and fucked themselves over. They sound... like regular demons. ]
Good idea. I can alter a few of the gardemeks - I can change a few of their weaponry to shoot holy water. That's- that's probably something doable, right?
[He doesn't know how this works. He's doing his best. At the moment, however, his bigger concern is his partner, so: ]
Man I was thinking about getting the gardemeks to shoot holy water canons, but this is even better! I've fired chemicals at a demon once and they were really effective! We should totally do that!
